Our Story
Seed Stock cattle raised on 0ver 3,000 acres
Early On
Initially working the land as tobacco farmers, Locust Hill Cattle Company has humble beginnings. As as the tobacco industry dissolved in Caswell County and beyond, the family operated farm was transitioned to a cow-calf operation.
With a lifelong dream to have a viable cattle company, owner Todd Hodges developed an interest early on, after graduating from NC State, in the Gelbvieh breed, due to its superior genetics.
The Locust Hill Cattle Company was formed in the early 2000’s. Working together with friends and family members, the herd has consistently expanded. After trips to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, it was the purchase of “Big Dog” that was a real turning point for the genetics of the operation.
Locust Hill Farms has been in operation for 24 years. It was founded in 2oo1 with its first purchased Gelbvieh cattle.
At Locust Hill Cattle Company, we appreciate the docility that is found in the Gelbvieh breed.
Making a mark
Today the farm has over 250 brood cows. “Our breeding program includes extensive artificial insemination and embryo transfer, which allow Locust Hill to have the highest advanced genetic cattle possible,” says owner Todd Hodges. “Our goal is to produce the highest quality seed stock for the cattle industry; this includes breeding bulls and heifers. All this to help cattle producers establish sound, productive herds with our high-quality genetics.”
Hodges also raises Angus and Balancer cattle. Balancer is a hybrid breed of beef cattle, a combination of Gelbvieh and Angus. “We cross breed Gelbvieh and Angus for their hybrid vigor, resulting in a higher growth rate and better overall genetic package.”
Bringing the dream to reality, Locust Hill Cattle Company has hosts annual bull and cattle sale at the Oakhaven location in Pelham, NC. After several years of producing award winning bulls and females, the farm is pleased to offer product to the public.
